How to Wash a Baseball Cap

Discover how to properly clean and care for your baseball cap while preserving its shape, color, and character. From gentle hand washing to machine and dishwasher methods, this guide explores the safest techniques to refresh your cap without compromising its structure or timeless appeal.

Did your favorite baseball cap take a hit from a sunny hike, a long day outdoors, or everyday wear? Sweat stains, dust, and moisture buildup are natural signs of a cap that has lived — but they do not mean its story is over.

With the right care, a baseball cap can retain its shape, color, and character for much longer. Whether cleaned gently by hand, carefully in the washing machine, or — in certain cases — in the dishwasher, the essential rule remains the same: protect the structure while refreshing the fabric.

01

Before You Wash

The care label comes first

Before cleaning any baseball cap, always check the care label inside. Not every cap is washable, and older styles in particular may contain cardboard inside the brim, which can warp permanently when exposed to water.

Important
If the cap is vintage, delicate, heavily structured, or has sentimental value, avoid soaking it. Gentle spot cleaning or hand washing is always the safest choice.

02

Does the Brim Contain Cardboard?

A small detail that changes everything

Most modern baseball caps use a plastic insert to help maintain the shape of the brim. Vintage caps, especially those from the 1980s or earlier, may still contain cardboard.

To check, gently tap or flex the brim. A hollow, papery sound can indicate cardboard inside. When in doubt, avoid full washing, do not soak the cap, and choose a very gentle hand-cleaning method instead.

03

Hand Washing a Baseball Cap

The safest method for most caps

Hand washing is the most controlled and respectful way to clean a baseball cap. It is especially recommended for delicate fabrics, dyed materials, vintage styles, or caps with embroidery.

Before washing, test for colorfastness by rubbing a hidden area with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent. If color transfers to the cloth, avoid full washing and clean only the stained areas.

What you’ll need

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • A clean bowl or sink
  • A soft-bristle brush, such as a toothbrush
  • Clean, lukewarm water

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Lightly dampen the cap or only the stained areas.
  2. Mix lukewarm water with a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. Dip the brush into the mixture and gently scrub stained areas in circular motions.
  4. Rinse carefully with clean water, avoiding unnecessary soaking.
  5. Blot excess moisture with a towel and allow the cap to air dry naturally.

Never dry a baseball cap in direct sunlight, on a heater, or in a dryer. Heat can shrink the fabric, fade the color, and distort the shape.

04

Machine Washing a Baseball Cap

Only when the care label allows it

Some baseball caps can be washed in the machine, but this method should be used with caution. Avoid machine washing caps with cardboard brims, delicate stitching, leather details, or vintage materials.

Recommended settings

  1. Use a gentle cycle at a maximum of 86°F / 30°C.
  2. Choose a low spin speed to reduce the risk of shape damage.
  3. Add only a small amount of mild detergent.
  4. Place the cap in a laundry bag if possible for extra protection.
  5. Allow the cap to air dry naturally after washing.

Never use a tumble dryer. The combination of heat and movement can permanently alter the crown, brim, and overall fit of the cap.

05

The Dishwasher Method

A practical option for durable caps

In certain cases, the dishwasher can be a gentler alternative to the washing machine because there is no aggressive spinning. However, this method is only suitable for durable caps without cardboard brims or delicate details.

Before using this method

  • Make sure the dishwasher temperature does not exceed 104°F / 40°C.
  • Do not wash the cap together with dirty dishes.
  • Turn off the heated dry setting.
  • Support the cap on a bowl or suitable form to help preserve its shape.
  • Use a gentle, bleach-free detergent.

Instructions

  1. Place the cap securely on the top rack, supported to maintain its shape.
  2. Select a gentle cycle at a maximum of 104°F / 40°C.
  3. Disable heated drying before starting the cycle.
  4. Remove the cap carefully once the cycle is finished.
  5. Allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.
06

Letting the Cap Dry Properly

The final step that preserves the shape

Drying is just as important as washing. A cap should always be air dried slowly and naturally. To help preserve the crown, place it over a clean bowl, rolled towel, or cap form while it dries.

Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, hair dryers, and tumble dryers. Excessive heat can fade colors, shrink fabric, and permanently deform the brim or crown.

Good to know
Regular light cleaning is better than occasional aggressive washing. A little care after intense wear helps preserve the cap’s shape, color, and character for the long term.
